Job Overview Based on John Muir Health Nursing's Vision of being the innovative leader for the professional role of the registered nurse. The staff registered nurse (RN) is a licensed professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for planning, delegating, and coordinating the nursing care of a group of patients during a designated time frame utilizing the John Muir Behavioral Health Standards of Care, ANA's Standards of Practice and Professional Performance, and the California Nurse Practice Act, Title 22, and Title 16. The RN coordinates and provides care through the therapeutic use of self, nursing process, and the environment and technology, in partnership and collaboration with interdisciplinary team members. Essential Functions Effectively Applies the Nursing Standards of Practice * Assessment: Collects and analyzes data, involving the patient and family in the process, related to physical, functional, psycho-social, emotional, cultural, environmental, and spiritual patient attributes. * Assesses unit milieu and maintains a safe, secure, and therapeutic unit environment by conducting rounds. * Diagnosis; Uses assessment data to derive the nursing diagnosis, and validates diagnosis with the patient, family, and team. * Outcomes Identification - Identifies expected and realistic outcomes for the patient, considering risk, benefits, costs, scientific evidence, patient's values, and environmental and ethical factors. * Planning - Conducts treatment planning meetings. Ensures interdisciplinary plans are updated every week. Ensures that treatment plan reflects discharge planning and patient needs * Implementation - Implements the identified plan, including: coordination of care delivery and health teaching. * Evaluation - Evaluates the patient's progress toward attainment of outcomes, by collaborating with the patient and other team members to evaluate outcomes related to the plan of care. Clinical Knowledge: Demonstrates Necessary Department-Specific Knowledge related to the care of the patient population. * Patho-physiology and pharmacology relevant to the department's patient population. * Effective and safe use of clinical equipment relevant to the department's patient population. * Effective performance in clinical treatments and procedures relevant to the department's patient population. * Participates or leads community meetings and group therapy when appropriate. * Demonstrates knowledge of group dynamics and interactions * Reference specific competency skill list for department. Provides Clinical Leadership * Oversees the care provided by others, delegates elements of care to appropriate team members while maintaining accountability for the overall care of the patient. * Plans activities to optimize use of time, utilizes appropriate resources to plan and provide safe, effective, and financially responsible care * Exhibits flexibility with change. * Demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting and in the profession, including participating in professional organizations within their specialty. * Serves in leadership roles by participating on committees, councils, and teams. Standards of Professional Performance. * Practice Evaluation - Evaluates own practice in relation to standards, statutes, and regulations. * Compliant with policies and procedures, laws, regulatory and accrediting standards, including TJC, CDPH, and BRN. * Engages in self-evaluation, identifies strengths, opportunities for improvement, sets and achieves realistic goals. * Is open and receptive to feedback from peers and supervisors. * Participates in peer review, provides colleagues with formal or informal constructive feedback. * Evidence-Based Practice - Integrates evidence and research findings into practice, utilizes evidence-based knowledge to guide practice. * Utilizes best available evidence including research findings to guide practice decisions. * Integrates EBP/research into clinical practice. * Reads research articles and applies new information to nursing practice. * Uses research in the development or revisions of policies, procedures, and/or standards. * Critically analyzes and interprets research for application to practice. Ethical Practice and Privacy * Adheres to the Nursing Code of Ethics, Patient Bill of Rights, JMH Values and Goals. * Delivers care in a manner that preserves privacy, autonomy, dignity, rights, and honors the uniqueness of the individual. * Identifies and appropriately refers cases to Ethics Committee. Participates in resolving ethical issues. * Takes appropriate action regarding illegal, inappropriate, or unethical behavior * Maintains a therapeutic patient-nurse relationship with appropriate professional role boundaries.
